Summer 2008

Women Build volunteers are busy every Thursday at the build site in Sebastopol and are becoming seasoned builders.  Following the training classes in which they built a shed-- which now serves as the construction office for the two homes being built in Sebastopol-- they are building the Women Build House.  Many thanks to Brent Billings, Sr., for being an excellent teacher, trainer and supervisor to the volunteers.

In May, our local Habitat for Humanity Women Build group participated in National Women Build Week , sponsored by Habitat for Humanity International and Lowes. For our participation  we were awarded a grant for $5,000 from Lowe’s towards building materials.

Every year the Women Build fundraising group puts on the Mad Hatter Tea Party the Sunday before Mother’s Day.  Save the date, May 3, 2009, for the next Tea Party.  It is a lovely event and lots of fun:  great company, creative hats, tasty food and a variety of teas.

The local affiliate is part of Habitat for Humanity International, but is fully self supporting, raising its own funds for building within the local community.  Habitat for Humanity International has built more than 200,000 homes worldwide working with local affiliates within the USA and abroad.

Habitat for Humanity's Women Build program promotes the involvement of women in the construction of Habitat houses. Women-built projects provide an opportunity for women to learn construction in a supportive environment. Women Build works through affiliates to nurture, recruit and train women to build and maintain simple, decent, healthy and affordable homes.

More than 350 Habitat houses have been built in the United States by women crews.
