Green Build Dog House Contest
Dinner and Auction a Great Success!!!

Go to the Photo Gallery for pictures from the “Habitat is Doggone Green” dinner, auction, and dance (to the beat of Wasabi) on April 21st, at the Sebastopol Community Center.  The winner of our green build dog house competition was awarded the $1,000 prize donated by North Coast Builders Exchange the evening of the event.

The entries were displayed for the public to view and then auctioned off to raise money for the Habitat for Humanity Family/Faith/Youth build in Sebastopol.  A total of seven fabulous, one of a kind dog houses were purchased by our devoted Sebastopol supporters. Thanks to everyone who attended, and worked hard to make this event a reality and a fun event.

Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County is coordinating building four Green Build houses for low-income families in Sebastopol.

The first two 3-bedroom houses will be built on donated property on Johnson Street, now that our application for a lot split was accepted by the City of Sebastopol.   We will begin building these homes in partnership with the community of Sebastopol and the Homeowner Partners in early 2008.

A second project will build two houses as part of a 13 unit in-fill subdivision on Litchfield Lane.  The developer of this property chose to donate the property instead of paying “in lieu” fees to the City of Sebastopol thus meeting City requirements to provide either in-lieu affordable housing fees or the building of two affordable houses. Our homes will mirror the look of the other homes within the subdivision but will be which more modest in nature. These homes may be constructed as part of our Blitz Build project for 2008. Stay tuned for more details.

Total direct costs of construction are estimated to be $150,000 to $175,000 per house. All funds for the homes will be raised locally, and local volunteers and the participating families will provide most of the labor. These homes are designed to fit in with the character of the neighborhood.

If you would like to learn more about these exciting projects or want to help with fundraising, public relations, material donations or want to learn about becoming a build volunteer, please email Sebastopol Volunteer Project Chair, or contact the Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County office at (707) 578-7707.
